Adverbs

Adverbs are words that are used to modify a verb, an adjective, or another adverb (or a phrase or a clause), to answer questions such as "how," "when," "where," "how much". There are principally eight types of adverb, as shown in the table below:

Type Description Example
Manner Describes how something is done. Quickly stem the flow of blood by applying pressure to the wound.
Place Describes where something takes place, or where someone or something is. Bandages can be found in the first aid kit.
Time Describes when something takes place. Sign your expense claim and then send it to Accounting.
Frequency Describes how often something happens. Always wear safety goggles when operating this machine.
Sentence Modifies an entire sentence or clause. Obviously, such incidents must also be reported to Management.
Degree Modifies an adjective or another adverb, to emphasize or limit the scope of a statement. Plastic templates are hardly ever used nowadays.
Interrogative Used to form a question. When did this happen?
Relative Used to clarify a clause. Where sufficient grounds for termination exist, termination takes effect immediately.
