The format and content of a design document will depend entirely on the type of product being designed, and the industry within which it is being designed. Often, there will be very specific standards and guidelines in place.

In general, however, the primary purpose of a design document is to provide enough information to the manufacturer to allow the product to be built as intended. In addition to this, design documents are sometimes used to record the decisions that have been made regarding the design of a product, and the principles and assumptions used in the design of the product.

It is therefore important that design documents are extrenely clear, and entirely unambiguous.
