Illustrations: Cut-away perspective
From TechWriter Wiki
A perspective illustration is one that provides a view of an object from a 'realistic' viewpoint - that is, a close approximation to how the actual object would appear when viewed in real life. A cut-away perspective shows the object with portions of the outside 'removed', to show the detail inside. In this way, the illustration is not 'true to life' (because the object does not appear to the naked eye as illustrated). Compare this with an external perspective illustration.
Example: An example of a cutaway perspective illustration
Cutaway perspectives are useful where it is necessary to show detail of the inside of an object as it is physically located within the object (compare this with an exploded illustration.
Note that in line diagrams, the sections of the object that have been 'cut' are typically hatched.
