Nouns are words that name people, places, things, ('objects'), or abstract ideas. Nouns can be categorized as common nouns, proper nouns, or collective nouns.

Common nouns Common nouns refer to general (i.e., not specific) objects. Examples are:

  • book
  • warehouse
  • employee

Proper nouns Proper nouns refer to specific objects. Examples are:

  • Encyclopaedia Brittanica
  • France
  • ExxonMobil Corporation

In English, proper nouns are always capitalized.

Collective nouns Collective nouns refer to groups of objects. Examples are:

  • team
  • government
  • pride (of lions)
