Plumtree
From TechWriter Wiki
Plumtree is a a 'corporate portal' application. It is designed to pull content from multiple sources (most commonly corporate file servers) and present this collated information on a single Web page. It can be thought of as a corporate version of My Yahoo! or other Web-based interfaces that allow pages to be built using blocks of information (known as portlets in Plumtree terminology) pulled from disparate sources.
Portlets are grouped into publications which are placed on pages (which are navigated between using a single-level menu. Pages in turn may be assigned to specific communities. Using an access control system such as CA's SiteMinder, access rights can be defined independently for portlets, publications, pages and communities (as well as for the documents being retrieved by Plumtree) to limit access to specifc users. In this way, multiple (grouyps of) employees can all be directed to the same site, but will only see content that is relevant to them.
A portlet utilizes a snapshot query (SSQ) which defines from where (typically a folder on a web server) the content to be displayed int he query should be retrieved. The SSQ can also define the number of items to display for the portlet on the main screen (it is necessary to click the portlet title to display the full list of items) and whether the portlet should display documents, subfolders, or both.
Plumtree was originally developed by Plumtree Software, which was founded by ex-employees of both Oracle and Informix. Plumtree Software was bought by BEA Systems in 2005.
