RACI is an acronym for Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, and Informed. The term is typically used to refer to a RACI Chart, which identifies, for a set of tasks or activities, the person, position, or organization:

  • Responsible for carrying out the task;
  • Accountable for ensuring the task is carried out;
  • Consulted regarding the execution of the task;
  • Informed about the execution of the task.

The concept of RACI charts has been expanded over the years to include a number of additional 'roles', in varying permutations. The most common of these additional roles are:

  • Support - Supports the execution of the activity;
  • Verifies - Verifies that the person responsible has executed the activity correctly;
  • Signs off - Signs off on the completed activity;
  • Out of loop - Is not involved in the activity at all (sometimes this is as useful to know as who is actively involved in the activity).
